Are Canadian consumers ready for the mobile wallet?

This is a comment I made to the question in the title in a group specialized in Interactive Media in Ontario, Canada.

The question referred to a survey done by Technology Strategies International on Mobile wallets.

I would suggest that the question is not the right one here. I would probably ask: What is the way Canadians prefer to pay on mobile devices?

In reality, I think the survey from the news release shows people's reluctance in using the wallet system unless its from a very well known and secure source, like a bank. I would presume they would also trust giants such as Amazon, Google and others to support the Wallet concept holding their cash, but if you want the end user to trust a service or online product provider, its best to use another approach than the wallet idea.

One way to do this, is to use a point system and allow the user to pay for points. It ends up being the same thing as your points on the web site are used to make purchases on the site, but for the user, it feels much less invasive to their hard earned cash as psychologically, its not really money they have left on there.

But really, this is just cheating.

Though the wallet concept can work well for some providers, there are far better revenue models out there that would be more readily adopted. One must simply find the proper model for their business, considering the end-user perception, of course, and run with it following offer and demand.
