Ultimately, this hasn't been true for the longest time.
Though the idea is quite nice as no one wants to be assaulted, invaded or be deprived of their right to freedom, the information available and truths that are coming out of the woodwork has shown that:
- Invaders invade with the blessing of their own population ONLY if the leaders of said country convinces them that the military action is "just". The real reason for the invasion is typically hidden and all about money or power for a very short list of individuals (and most certainly not to the benefit of the general population).
- Military commanders that are said to "defend" against some aggressor are either doing just that (see #1), or are using that pretext to invade with the pretext of defending (see U.S. "war on terror" which seems to need to involve most of the middle east and eastern Europe.
Right now, the US is the biggest terrorist in the world, and a bully, as seen by their military spending and use of over 500 military installations and bases in 150 countries. If they were doing that to be the "world police" they would be doing it with the approval of all countries. Truth is, they are doing that to intimidate all countries in the world into submitting to them as the main economic and political power in the world.
No sense of being equal to every other people or country in the world here. The Americans are taught from birth that the US is the most powerful nation in the world an that their President is indeed the most powerful man in the world.
For sure, he can beat up every other nation with military might if he wanted to. Truly the biggest man in the yard flexing his muscles and being a bully to any other kid that isn't doing what he likes, all the while telling the American people that all this posturing and foreign policy is for the good of others and the defense of American freedoms.
Its amazing how people get the illusion of safety with large sophisticated militaries at their backs (US, Canada, UK, France, etc...) while others feel a lot of fear because they aren't friends with the US and are confronted by large advanced militaries (middle-east, S-E Asian countries, Eastern Europe squished between US bases and Russians).
Real terrorism is attempt to dominate through fear. Honestly, a lot of people display fear of the US military and hate the US because of their involvement in or around their country. As they say, fear makes people do crazy things (like other acts of terrorism).
If all countries, with the US being the primary player, would eliminate their militaries, perhaps keeping a small proportion to be handed out to a world entity to serve as a true world police force at the service of all peoples of the world (to fight against large gangs, warlords that take advantage of others, genocide etc...) indiscriminate of soldier allegiance.
Check out No More Armies for an organization that fights for just that.
